Example Fine Situations

Augustus Bruin is great at keeping track of time, and after his four hours are up, he packs up all the laptop gear and goes to return the laptop. It's a peak hour, and there are several people standing in line. By the time the laptop is finally checked back in, the system shows that it's been out for 4 hours and 11 minutes. Because of the grace period, Augustus is not fined.

Abigail Bruin is a little frazzled getting ready for her midterms, and can't find a seat in Powell, so she goes to use the laptop in Ackerman. She meets up with friends, loses track of time, and by the time she remembers to return the laptop, 4 hours and 10 minutes have gone by. She races over to Powell, and has to wait in line for 11 minutes. Her laptop is 21 minutes late, and a fine of $10 will be charged to her BAR account.

Allison Bruin checked out a laptop at 11:30 am to work on something at home, where she felt more comfortable. At 3 o’clock pm she felt sick to her stomach and couldn’t leave the house. She e-mailed feedback@clicc.ucla.edu and called into the CLICC lab to explain the situation before her laptop was due back at 3:30 pm. Because she contacted the right people Allison didn’t get fined. Instead she returned the laptop the next day feeling much better.

Alanis Bruin knows she's got a lot of work to do and is hoping to be able to renew her laptop. She has always been able to renew online, and assumes that today will be no different. So she finds a nice spot in the sculpture garden to study, and when the laptop is just about due, she goes to renew it online. Sadly, many people are trying to get their projects done, and there is a line of people waiting to check out a laptop back at CLICC. She cannot renew the laptop online. By the time she reaches the laptop lending desk and waits in line, 4 hours and 34 minutes have elapsed. Since her laptop is 34 minutes late, she is charged a $15 fine.

Alex Bruin is taking summer classes at UCLA. He checks out a laptop at 5:23 pm to work on his project. Alex finds a comfortable spot in the reading room to work for the next 4 hours. He assumes the laptop lending location’s hours are the same as they are during the regular school year. He failed to notice the hours are different during summer session. He assumes the laptop is due back at 9:23 pm when it is really due back at 7 pm the lending location’s closing time. Alex notices the library is closing and rushes to return the laptop, but is 23 minutes late. Since it's after closing Alex is fined $50 dollars.

Archibald Bruin is graduating and really needs to get his final paper finished by Monday of finals week. He checks out a laptop on Friday afternoon from the Music library, failing to note that the lending desk closes at 7pm. He comes back to return the laptop at 9pm to find the lending desk closed. He figures that he might as well keep the laptop and see if he can talk his way out of the fine later. So he returns the laptop at 8am on Monday morning to the CLICC lab in Powell, having had the laptop out 60 hours past closing on Friday. At $50/hour, that amounts to $3,000. But the maximum is $2,000, so that is what Archibald will be fined. Had he brought the laptop back to Powell at 9pm, the fine would have only been $50.
