Using Your Own
Laptop
We will
help you as much as we can to get connected,
but your laptop is your responsibility and we can only help with the
network connection, not other kinds of hardware or software
troubleshooting.
What
You Need
You need a laptop computer, an ethernet (network) adapter, and a UCLA Logon.
Modems
vs. Ethernet
A modem card will not work with these ports. A modem is used to connect
to a computer (or a network) over an analog telephone line. An ethernet
connection is over 100 times faster than a 28.8K modem and is used to
connect your computer directly to a digital network.
Port
Locations
Each of our lending desks has a port map specific to the library that
it is in. Feel free to take a copy when you come by the desk. Here is a
list
of libraries on campus with public access ports as well as a map that
shows where wireless
access is available.
Logging
On to the Network
To get internet access, plug in the ethernet cable first before turning
on your laptop. After the laptop has booted, open a web browser and it
will automatically open to the login web page. Enter your UCLA Logon and password. You will get a "Login Successful" message and
will then be redirected to your webpage. Personal laptops cannot print
to CLICC's printers and are unable to access the other servers.
Printing
Printing is not available from your laptops to CLICC's printers. If you
would like to print, bring your laptop to the nearest CLICC laptop
lending desk and we will help you get your data to a computer that can
print.
Troubleshooting
If you are having problems connecting, bring your laptop to the nearest
CLICC laptop lending desk and ask one of our consultants for help.
Remember, never leave your laptop unattended!
