Currently enrolled UCLA Students, currently employed UCLA Faculty and staff members may check out a laptop using their UCLA Logon and password. Laptop borrowing privileges may be revoked or suspended based on violations of policies at the discretion of Library Administration. LocationsCLICC laptop lending locations are located throughout the UCLA campus. With the exception of College Library and the Charles E. Young Research Library, you'll find most of the stations near the respective library's circulation desk. How to find the College Library Laptop Lending Location
How To Check OutApproach the touch-screen kiosk and follow the instructions on the screen. You do NOT need to show your BruinCard, but you will need to remember your UCLA logon and password to complete the checkout process. The CLICC consultant or staff will bring a laptop bag, check the battery and accessories, scan the laptop, and tell you when your laptop is due.Laptops are checked out for a period of four hours. If there are less than four hours until we close, it will be due at closing time (see the schedule on the left for today's hours). RenewalsYou may renew your laptop ONLY after the third hour of your checkout (e.g. if you checked it out at 1:30 p.m. you can start to renew it at 4:30 p.m.), and there are three ways to renew: on the laptop bag's tag you'll find the Web address (://my.clicc.ucla.edu) and Helpdesk phone number (310.825.7557) for laptop renewals, or you can come to the laptop lending station and renew in person. In addition to allowing you to renew your laptop, myCLICC can also tell you when your laptop is due, or if it's already overdue (busted...). You can only renew laptops when there are enough laptops for other people. Otherwise you will have to come in by the time your laptop is due, return it, and wait for another laptop to be available for you. You cannot renew if the laptop is already late; you must bring it back along with the bag and accessories to the lending station. Returning Your LaptopPlease return your laptop on time (see Laptop Fines? to learn what happens when you return a laptop late) and with all accessories in the bag. An inventory will be made of all accessories, and the screen will be checked to see if it's okay. If something is missing or damages were incurred, it will be noted and you may be fined. Also, if you noticed a problem with your laptop, such as an application not working or the mouse not responding, please let the CLICC consultant or staff know so we can work on fixing it.Remember to return your laptop to the same lending station you used to check it out; other lending stations will NOT accept your laptop unless the original lending station is already closed. Late Laptop FinesFrom 1999 to 2003, CLICC checked out laptops without an effective enforcement mechanism to ensure that students returned their laptops so others could use them. Over time, we had more and more of a problem getting students to bring their laptops back, especially at closing time. CLICC staff would have to spend hours sometimes trying to chase down students who hadn't returned laptops, involving the Community Service Officers and sometimes the police. The fines are meant to provide an incentive to return laptops on time. Also consider that UCLA has an undergraduate population of around thirty five thousand. There are nearly two hundred laptops available to check out. Especially during midterms and finals weeks, the laptops are in high demand and we owe it to all students to get a fair chance to use a laptop. As of January, 2004, students who return laptops after their due times are subject to fines. The fines are in response to students who have repeatedly returned laptops late without regard to other students waiting to use them. Laptop fines are:
Maximum fine is $2000 (the approximate replacement value of the laptop). Laptop fines are billed to your BAR account and show up a couple of days after the infraction. How We Inform YouWe do a number of things to ensure that anyone checking out a laptop would have several opportunities to know our policies.
Grace PeriodAfter the four-hour lending period, there is a twenty-minute grace period to allow for any delays such as waiting in line to return a laptop. The 20 minute grace period still counts towards the late fee, but fines are not imposed until the twenty first minute. For example, if your laptop was due at 3 p.m. and you bring it back at 3:45 p.m., the laptop is 45 minutes late and you'll be fined $15.If you return a laptop after closing, there is a $50 dollar fine per hour, but there is also a grace period of twenty minutes where fines are not imposed. You will be charged for a full hour for keeping a laptop a portion of that hour. For example, if you are running late and return a laptop nineteen minutes after the closing of a laptop lending location you will not incur a late fine. But if you were running late and returned a laptop twenty one minutes late you will incur a late fine for a full hour ($50). If you were to keep the laptop sixty one minutes after closing than you would be charged $100 dollars. So what do we do with any money collected by fines? In a perfect world, we wouldn't collect any fines because everyone would return their laptop on time. However, any fines that we do collect will go right back into the laptop lending program. If after reading this, you feel that your case is special or different, please email or use the form at the left to argue your position. Please include your UCLA Logon (no passwords!) and the email address you'd like us to respond to. |
